When contacting animal control or law enforcement, provide as much accurate information as possible. They will need to know the following:

  1. Exact location: Provide the address, nearest intersection, landmarks, or directions to where the animal is located.
  2. Animal description: Include the type of animal, breed if known, color, approximate size, and number of animals involved.
  3. Description of suspected cruelty or neglect: Explain concerns such as lack of food or water, inadequate shelter, untreated injuries, abandonment, confinement in dangerous conditions, or intentional physical abuse.
  4. Dates and times: Describe when the incident occurred, how long the conditions have existed, and whether the problem is ongoing.
  5. Photographs or videos: Provide clear documentation if available and obtained legally. Never trespass or place yourself in danger to collect evidence.
  6. Witness information: Provide your contact details if you’re willing to be contacted for follow-up, along with any other relevant witness information.
  7. Request a case number: Ask for a report or incident number and keep it for future reference.

*IMPORTANT REMINDERS*

  • You do not need to prove that cruelty has occurred before reporting a reasonable concern. Investigators determine whether violations have taken place.
  • Do not confront a suspected abuser or enter private property without permission.
  • If you believe an animal is in immediate, life-threatening danger or witness cruelty actively occurring, call 911.
  • If the situation is not an emergency, contact the animal control agency or law enforcement department responsible for the incident’s location.

Animal Support and Protection (ASAP) Rescue encourages the public to report suspected animal cruelty and neglect. ASAP Rescue is a nonprofit animal rescue organization and does not have law enforcement authority to investigate or prosecute animal cruelty cases.
